Art Nouveau Shade Works

Antique Mosaic Advert
Perth Amboy Evening News Aug 1910

The first mention of this firm was in January of 1910. Reports of increased business showed them moving from their current location on New Brunswick Avenue to larger premises in the McCormick Building. In August of the same year came additional local coverage:

"The Amboy Plating Works is another addition to The Art Nouveau Shade Works, in the McCormick Building. Up-to-date machinery has been installed for all kinds of electroplating of brass and also the refinishing of the metals. On account of the increasing trade in orders for shades, L. J. Veith has made arrangements to enlarge the glass factory and also devote the third floor of the building for the manufacture of shades."

This announcement suggests that Veith had started making shades first, with metal processing following. The last mention of the firm in the press was in July of 1911. Interestingly, Amboy Works was suing both Louis Veith Sr. and Jr. for $100 in court for alleged work done. The suit was unsuccessful, but it underlines the fact that these skilled workers had connections with employers beyond their own.
