I first became aware of the work of Steven Stelz after a friend of mine commissioned a series of windows from him. I kept in touch with the project's progress and after seeing Stelz's work, both on his web site and featured in a very nice book "Tiffany Studios Techniques" by Edith Crouch, was anxious to visit my friend after the work was completed and installed.

To say they were impressive is a bit of an understatement. While the photos here only hint at how wonderful the windows are in person, it is clear that they embody many of the glass techniques and design elements that Tiffany Studios became famous for.

Steven Stelz's many talents include the revival of the Patte De Vere technique, made famous in the early 20th century by Gabriel Argy Rousseau, Almeric Walter and others. Lamp making is also done in his studio, featuring not only the many popular offerings in the familiar Tiffany Studios patterns, but also others designed in-house. While these offerings use the traditional copper foil method, surprisingly, Steven has also developed a series of lamp shades in Pate De Vere, almost unheard of by modern day makers. I got a first-hand look at a couple of these while at Brimfield some years ago.

His landscape wall plaques, also incorporating this technique are seen now and again, often mounted in quarter sawn oak.

With his own in-house glass making capability and years of experimentation under his belt, Steven can produce glass as the need arises which offers an almost unlimited scope from which to craft his creations.

Stelz Studios Windows

The windows were commissioned by a family as a series of 8 transoms. Each scene represents the subtle seasonal changes occurring just outside the family's house throughout any given year. There is an appearance of a hawk and a cardinal, both were requested elements of the design and carry personal significance to the family. Click on any image to view the series in higher detail. Many thanks to the family for kindly supplying these excellent images.
